Only 3.4% of Cuban homes are connected to the
Internet, but the country's government is making efforts to expand
access by 2020.
Cuba state telecommunications monopoly, Etecsa, said
on June 18 that the island will offer Wi-Fi in 35 public spots, a
landmark move that allows greater Internet access for Cubans. The cost
of using the Internet will also be lowered from $4.50 to $2 per hour.
Cubans make $20 a week on average.
Etecsa approved the island's first free, public
internet service at a Havana cultural center run by famed artist Kcho, the AP reported March 12.
